MISSION STATEMENT

Tomchei Shabbos of Bergen County is an organization dedicated to providing Shabbos meals to any needy Jewish family in Bergen County. Tomchei Shabbos has been in existence since 1990 and, over that period of time, over one hundred fifty thousand meals have been distributed to members of our community.

The recipients of Tomchei Shabbos include single mothers, Russian immigrants, the elderly, the unemployed, the sick and the disabled. Some families require only short-term help, while others require our assistance for an extended period of time.

Every family receives a package on a weekly basis. This package provides challah, wine, chicken and other basic essentials that enable the family to enjoy two Shabbos meals per week. A more extensive package is distributed on holidays. The Pesach package covers the families’ needs for the entire eight day period.

Tomchei Shabbos is essentially a volunteer organization. All drivers and packers are volunteers and, so, almost the entire budget is allocated directly for the purchase of food.
