NEW - THIS WEEK - ISM UPDATE - Conference moved to Ohio State University
 QUICK #1 - OXFAM's Belgian's Anti-Israel Boycott
QUICK #2 - Sign the Petition Against Homicide Bombings
  Project Embrace

This Week's Action Item

The International Solidarity Movement (www.palsolidarity.org) supports “the Palestinian right to resist occupation” through “armed struggle.”  As you have read in previous alerts, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has linked the two British bombers of Mike’s Place in Tel Aviv to the ISM.  Thankfully their “conference,” originally scheduled to take place in New Jersey at Rutgers University, was moved probably in no small part to pressure from individuals and groups on both Rutgers University as well as Governor McGreevey.  Unfortunately, the group has selected another state university as the site of its hate-mongering gathering.  While we, as a democracy, support free speech and the constitutional right to express one’s opinion, there are lines that any organization or university can draw a line – ask them, would they allow the Klu Klux Klan speak or a group that promotes rape or pedophilia?  There are several things that can be done to ensure that a group that promotes and encourages terrorism is not given a public forum in which to speak.  (1) Write to Ohio State Governor, either via email at Governor.Taft@das.state.oh.us; via mail at 30th Floor, 77 South High Street, Columbus OH 43215; or via phone at 614-466-3555; (2) Write to Ohio State University President, Karen Holbrook via mail at Office of the President, OSU, 205 Bricker Hall, 190 North Oval Mall, Columbus, OH 43210; phone 614-292-2424; or fax 614-292-1231; (3) Ohio residents can sign this petition being circulated by AMCHA http://www.petitiononline.com/amcha803/petition.html; (4) OSU graduates can sign this petition to be sent to President Holbrook http://www.petitiononline.com/stopISM/petition.html; and (5) write to Ohio state members of Congress via www.senate.gov and www.house.gov.

Quick #1

After receiving tens of thousands of signatures via email petitions, the Chair of Oxfam International, Ian Anderson, responded that an inflammatory campaign by the Belgium affiliate of Oxfam amended its website and removed a link to an offensive poster.  However, as of last week, this was not done and a published apology on the website singles out Israel for the blame in the Arab-Israeli conflict:  “Our action is by no means aimed at the Jewish communities, either in Belgium or in Israel. Our aim is to express our opposition to the policy of the Israeli Government towards the Palestinians which upholds occupation of their territory and includes acts of grave violence, which we believe is the main cause for the continuing conflict.”   Sign the Simon Wiesenthal Center petition today to protest this one-sided and dangerous message being promulgated by Oxfam’s Belgian affiliate and the boycott of Israel’s agricultural products at http://www.wiesenthal.com/social/press/pet1.cfm?petid=78&m=9442L11547425s&src=xxxx.

Quick #2

Sign this petition to request the U.N. treat homicide bombings and acts of terror as “war crimes against humanity” and that raising ones children to commit such acts is against the Geneva Convention and a fundamental abuse of human rights.  Go to http://www.petitiononline.com/bombings/petition.html.

PROJECT EMBRACE

Project Embrace was initiated by the Israel Emergency Solidarity Fund – One Family to pair terror victim families with shuls such as Rinat. The financial commitment and the emotional support provided enable these families to begin to rebuild their shattered lives. We thank everyone who has contributed thus far to help the Sakuri family.

We continue to seek funds (checks are payable to the Rabbi’s discretionary fund/Project Embrace) and volunteers, in addition to ideas. Please contact either of us, or for additional information, please visit either http://www.onefamily.org.il, or http://www.walk4israel.com.

Some of the activities surrounding Project Embrace continue to be:

  • Connecting with the Sakuri family, through letters, phone calls, emails
  • In conjunction with our Youth Groups, allowing the children to participate in an email/letter writing campaign
  • Fundraising campaign
  • Sending birthday and Chanukah gifts to the family’s children
  • Visiting with the family when we are in Israel

IMPORTANT INFORMATION & DATES

During these difficult times, we would like to remind people of the power of prayer – take a moment to say Tehilim and daven for the IDF and State of Israel. Any of the Tehilim would be of enormous help and Prakim 20, 83, 121, 130 & 142 are most appropriate. In the merit of saying these Psalms/Tehilim, may G-d bless us all with peace, good health and security.
To send a letter of gratitude to soldiers in the IDF to be posted in the Hospitality Hut of Gush Etzion, please address a message to izzy@actcom.co.il
One way to put a face to this tragedy is to look at the pictures of victims posted on http://www.walk4israel.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=Victims and then send a note of condolence and words of comfort and solidarity to the families of these victims. Take a moment of your time to remind those suffering from Palestinian violence that they are not alone.
The media and other sources of information cite numbers of dead Israelis v. Palestinians, but these numbers often stand alone without definition or context and create a distorted picture. To better understand the true nature of the fatalities on both sides of the conflict in Israel, please refer to the summarized study conducted by the International Policy Institute for Counter-Terrorism at http://www.ict.org.il/articles/articledet.cfm?articleid=440
For a short e-presentation on the conflict in the Middle East, please click on the following link and feel free to forward to others. http://www.conceptwizard.com/conflict.html
The OU Israel Action Calendar.  Click on www.ou.org/israel/action/israelaction.htm to see a calendar of speakers, events, fairs, etc. occurring in your area.
Israeli Student Bedding:  Support the Israeli economy and order student bedding for your son or daughter going to study in Israel this year.  For $150 you can buy an entire package of bedding that will be delivered to the student in Israel – contact Stuart Pilichowski (formerly of Fair Lawn, NJ) at 972-3-613-3997 or stuart@d-n-d.co.il to place an order.
Free Coupon Book. The strongest way to show your solidarity with Israel is to visit in person.  Order a free coupon book through www.goisrael.com and save up to $1,300 on hotels, flights, tours, shopping, meals, etc.  Go to the website or call 1-888-77-ISRAEL for more information.
A new program, Pups for Peace, has been started to train dogs to detect bombs – the dogs will first be trained in L.A. and then transported to the Golan. For more information go to http://www.golanfund.org/Telesite_33olcgi/ts.cgi?tsurl=0.227.70.0 (www.golanfund.org).
The American Sephardi Federation, in cooperation with the Government of Israel, is leading an effort to document the property and possessions left behind by Jews forced to flee from Arab lands. There are, according to recent reports and sources, almost an equal number of Jewish refugees from Arab lands as there are Arabs seeking the “right of return” to Israel.  Go to www.asfonline.org/portal/ for more information and to file a claim if you (or your family) are Jewish Refugees from Arab Lands.
